Warning Signs of Neurological Emergencies

Some neurological conditions require immediate medical attention. Recognizing these warning signs can be life-saving.

Stroke Warning Signs

Remember the acronym FAST:

  • Face drooping - Is one side of the face drooping?
  • Arm weakness - Can both arms be raised equally?
  • Speech difficulty - Is speech slurred or strange?
  • Time - Call emergency services immediately
  • Other stroke symptoms include:

  • Sudden severe headache
  • Vision problems
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty walking
  • Head Injury Red Flags

    After any head injury, watch for:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Worsening headache
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Seizures
  • One pupil larger than the other
  • Clear fluid from nose or ears
  • Increasing confusion
  • Inability to recognize people or places
  • Spinal Emergency Signs

    Seek immediate care if you experience:

  • Sudden severe back pain with trauma
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Progressive weakness in legs
  • Numbness in the saddle area
  • Inability to walk
  • What To Do

    1. Call emergency services immediately

  • Don't wait to see if symptoms improve
  • 2. Note the time

  • When did symptoms start?
  • 3. Don't give food or water

  • In case surgery is needed
  • 4. Keep the person calm and still

  • Especially with spinal injuries
  • 5. Provide information to medical staff

  • Medical history, medications, allergies
  • Prevention

    While not all emergencies can be prevented:

  • Control blood pressure and diabetes
  • Wear seatbelts and helmets
  • Avoid risky activities
  • Know your family history
  • Have regular health check-ups
